The Monocacy Lions Club is one of 46 thousand Lions Clubs world-wide pledged to provide unselfish service to their communities and those in need. With 1.4 million members in over 46,000 clubs in over 200 countries worldwide, we are the largest service organization in the world.
Starting as a dream of Chicago, Illinois, businessman Melvin Jones to consolidate independent service clubs into one strong, influential unit for service to humanity, on June 17, 1917 the organization was created as the International Association of Lions Clubs.
The principal ideal upon which the Lions Clubs International was founded was one of Service to those in need without regard to politics, religion, race, or the personal interests of the individual members. We are united in helping out community and helping those less fortunate.
The Monocacy Lions Club was chartered in 1940 with 24 members. Since then it has grown, with current membership at more than 47 members. Members are drawn from the communities of Barnesville, Beallsville, Boyds, Comus, Darnstown, Dickerson, Poolesville and the surrounding region of Western Montgomery County.
Since 1940 our mission has been to serve our neighbors and communities and to help the less fortunate. We are dedicated to serving those in need, whether in our own community or half-way around the world. Our service area includes the communities of Barnesville, Beallsville, Dawsonsville, Dickerson, and the surrounding areas.
The Lions work with other social organizations such as the Western Upper Montgomery County Community Organization (WUMCO) to identify and provide service to those in need. Working with the "LEOS" in the Poolesville John Poole Middle School and High School, they serve the community and inspire leadership via service. The Monocacy "LEOS" are a youth organization of the Lions International: Leadership, Experience, Opportunity and Service.
